Joseph was singled out from his brothers because God chose him to perform a special role. 35When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place. (Ge 35:24) At his birth, Rachel, because of having been barren, exclaimed: God has taken away my reproach! She then called his name Joseph, saying: Jehovah is adding another son to me, that is, another son besides Dan and Naphtali, whom Rachel had accepted as her own although they were borne by her maidservant Bilhah. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after his mothers death. Though it displeased Joseph, Jacob, in blessing Ephraim and Manasseh, kept his right hand placed on the younger, Ephraim. Finally they even sold their land and themselves as slaves to Pharaoh. (Ge 37:28, 36; 39:1) This purchase by the Egyptian Potiphar was not unusual, ancient papyrus documents indicating that Syrian slaves (Joseph was half Syrian [Ge 29:10; 31:20]) were valued highly in that land. "[118] Similarly, the Avot of Rabbi Natan cited Genesis 47:14 for the proposition that the silver of Egypt thus returned to its place of origin in Egypt. I am Joseph, your brother, he said, the one you sold into Egypt! WebAfter appointing Joseph as viceroy, Pharaoh gave him as a wife Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. The Midrash answered that while it is true that all people dream, a king's dream affects the whole world. Thus, the Sages taught, Jacob conveyed to his sons: "When you are fully sated, do not show yourselves either before Esau or before Ishmael, so that they should not envy you. Pharaoh called for Joseph, who made it clear it was God who gave the interpretation of dreams. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he was tending the flock with his brothers, the sons of his fathers wives Bilhah and Zilpah, and he brought their father a bad report about them. Speiser argued that the Jahwist was not concerned in the main with the poetic justice of Joseph's triumph over his brothers, or Joseph's magnanimity in forgiving them for tormenting him. Twice Joseph had to go aside to weep privately (42:24; 43:30). 25Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there as well. 31And they got up early the next morning and swore an oath to each other. We told him our dreams and he interpreted them for us individually. Therefore, God waited until the magicians had wearied and had exhausted Pharaoh's spirit, and then Joseph came and restored it. When the firstborn son was old enough, Judah acquired a Canaanite wife for him named Tamar. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 30Now you have gone off because you long for your fathers house. 22In my dream I also saw seven heads of grain, plump and ripe, growing on a single stalk. 33And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.g They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our donkeys., 19So they approached Josephs steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house. When he turned back and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and had him bound before their eyes. 46She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, Drink, and I will water your camels as well. So I drank, and she also watered the camels. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah. But the Rabbis taught that Jacob had directed his sons to embalm him, as Genesis 50:12 reports that "his sons did to him as he commanded them". We saw his anguish when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. 2 The LORD was with Joseph, and he [even though a slave] became a successful and prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. 24and that night the LORD appeared to him and said, I am the God of your father Abraham. He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I screamed as loud as I could. 12Joseph also provided his father and brothers and all his fathers household with food for their families. Third, Judahs immorality in chapter 38 will serve as a backdrop, against which the moral purity of Joseph will be contrasted in Genesis 39. If not, I will find out.. 4And God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. During this same time frame of 22 years (approximately), Judah leaves home, marries a Canaanite woman, and has three sons, two of whom are old enough to marry, and are so wicked that God takes their lives. 14Please let my lord go ahead of his servant. 89 If Israel is still living in Hebron (35:27), Shechem would have been approximately 50 miles away. Joseph plays a very key role in the history of the nation Israel, and his example has much to teach us as well. Apparently, though, this resettlement in cities was a temporary measure. His was not the good life.. Rabbi Judah thus argued that Joseph increased efficiency by decentralizing food distribution. 22And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his fathers nakedness and told his two brothers outside. 2So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised. In his final days, Jacob begins to manifest the fruits of faith.101 When standing before Pharaoh, Jacob admitted that his life had been shorter and more unpleasant than that of his predecessors: 7 Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and presented him before Pharaoh. 10You may settle among us, and the land will be open to you. Now, he fulfills his promise to his aged father. He does everything possible to avoid facing the problem. 7and sent out a raven. 18When Peleg was 30 years old, he became the father of Reu. He is able to employ the rebellious acts of unbelievers and the sins of the saints to accomplish His purposes. Joseph seated his brothers according to their birth order, which must have both amazed and puzzled them: How could he know? It was a royal feast, and Im sure that Josephs brothers (who had run out of grain some time earlier) would have appreciated it. 22And after the camels had finished drinking, he took out a gold ring weighing a beka,b and two gold bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels.c This shows that God and God's life are not two separate things, as are the lives of living beings. No shrine prostitute has been here, they answered. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified (Romans 8:28-30). At least some of the brothers wanted to kill Joseph and end it then and there. 7And Noah and his wife, with his sons and their wives, entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood. Thus, the Masoretic Text treats the parashah as one continuous whole. 19But Joseph replied, Do not be afraid. 24So Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised, Then I awoke. 5:19-25). This leads me to conclude that unless one can demonstrate spiritual leadership in the secular world of employment, I seriously doubt that he can exercise spiritual leadership in the church. (Ge 46:2847:11) Thus, wisely and lovingly Joseph made the best of an Egyptian prejudice against shepherds. His fall is the supreme example of the abuse of a stewardship (see Isaiah 14:13-14). [127], Rav Huna deduced from Judah's commitment to Jacob with regard to Benjamin in Genesis 43:9, "I will be surety for him; of my hand shall you require him", that a guarantor becomes responsible for the debt that he has guaranteed. Joseph did not actually use this cup for divination. Subsequently he interpreted the bakers dream to mean that he would be put to death in three days. 27When the time came for Tamar to give birth, there were twins in her womb. It was all too apparent to these older brothers that Jacob loved Joseph the son of his old age more than all of them combined (37:3, 4), and for this reason they hated Joseph. 21These men are at peace with us. 7Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, I will give this land to your offspring.d So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. So he took his fathers hand to move it from Ephraims head to Manassehs head. They were confident that none of them had stolen this cup, and so they overreacted to these charges. Everything on the earth will perish. How easy it is in prison to overlook the suffering of others, especially if you are suffering. (Mt 13:55; Lu 2:4; compare Lu 2:24 with Le 12:8.) They pulled Joseph out of the cistern and handed him over to the Ishmaelites, who paid them twenty pieces of silver (37:28). 9I will guarantee his safety. 15When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face. Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.. He instructed his servant to bring the men to his home and to prepare a fine meal for them to eat. 48During those seven years, Joseph collected all the excess food in the land of Egypt and stored it in the cities. 21Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. 8The clean and unclean animals, the birds, and everything that crawls along the ground She bore him two children, Manasseh and Ephraim. 23So he took his relatives with him, pursued Jacob for seven days, and overtook him in the hill country of Gilead. 42Then Pharaoh removed the signet ring from his finger, put it on Josephs finger, clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed a gold chain around his neck. 8 So now, it is not you who sent me here, but God. The Scriptural record is silent on the extent of the training Joseph gave to Jesus. 23And Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Both Jacob and his sons looked at their circumstances and concluded that God had brought about their destruction, but by the end of Genesis, we see that God used all these things to bring about their deliverance. But Rabbi Melai taught that the brothers did drink wine in moderation since their separation from Joseph, and only when reunited with Joseph did they drink to intoxication "with him". 8If he said, The speckled will be your wages, then the whole flock bore speckled offspring. Kselman argued that the Joseph narrative was thus not part of the Jahwist's work, but an independent literary work. 26Judah recognized the items and said, She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah. And he did not have relations with her again. Now then, here is your wife. 16Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her and said, Come now, let me sleep with you.. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. 95 This must have backhandedly comforted and encouraged Joseph, as he recalled that he had two dreams regarding his gaining authority over his brothers. 20Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; it marks Rachels tomb to this day. 66Then the servant told Isaac all that he had done. (7) Also in Jeremiah 12:5, the prophet asked, "And if in a land of Peace where you are secure" you are overcome, is it not logical to ask, "How will you do in the thickets of the Jordan?" He just happened to overhear Josephs brothers saying that they were moving on to Dothan, so Joseph set out to find them. It is the story of King Solomon and the two women, one with a dead baby and one with a live baby. This story has a powerful message that speaks not only to prisoners, but also to every single one of us. 4 He said to me, I am going to make you fruitful and will multiply you. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. 35That very day Laban removed all the streaked or spotted male goats and every speckled or spotted female goatevery one that had any white on itand every dark-colored lamb, and he placed them under the care of his sons. Scholars theorize that when the editor first mechanically put Reuben in the role of the oldest, but as the tribe of Reuben had virtually disappeared and the audience for the story were principally descendants of Judah, Judah was given the role of spokesman and hero in the end. The Elohists parallel account, in contrast, consistently used the names "Elohim" and "Jacob". v3 And God said, Let there be light. And there was light. The land is worth four hundred shekels of silver,b but what is that between you and me? Joseph and Asenath had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, both born during the seven years of plenty. Consequently Potiphars wife became infatuated with him. This doubtless strengthened Joseph as to the certain fulfillment of his own dreams and aided him to continue enduring. 8In the morning his spirit was troubled, so he summoned all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Now before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him. 30As soon as Isaac had finished blessing him and Jacob had left his fathers presence, his brother Esau returned from the hunt. 17Ishmael lived a total of 137 years. 32On that same day, Isaacs servants came and told him about the well they had dug. 23The archers attacked him with bitterness; in the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel. 15Not so!e replied the LORD. Jacob could only think of himself: Their father Jacob said to them, You are making me childless! 8When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, Who are these?, 9Joseph said to his father, They are the sons God has given me in this place., So Jacob said, Please bring them to me, that I may bless them.. Josephs dealings with his brothers will eventually bring them to repentance, and thus they will be reconciled as a family. v5 God called the light day and he called the darkness night. Judahs first son, Er, was evil in Gods sight and the Lord took his life (38:7). Let it be as you have said.. 93 One cannot know whether or not Potiphar had his doubts about the charges his wife brought against Joseph. I believe this is where Joseph had earlier failed in his relationship with his brothers. They said they had a younger brother, so let them prove it by bringing him with them the next time they came. Jacob and Esau(Malachi 1:15; Romans 9:629). [16] The 2nd reading (, aliyah) ends here. [17], In the third reading (, aliyah), Pharaoh told Joseph that in as much as God had shown him all this, there was none so discreet and wise as Joseph, and thus Pharaoh set Joseph over all the land of Egypt. 18Then Leah said, God has rewarded me for giving my maidservant to my husband. So she named him Issachar.g, 19Again Leah conceived and bore a sixth son to Jacob. When he had a good dream, he used to question whether dreams speak falsely, seeing as in Numbers 12:6, God says, "I speak with him in a dream?" The Midrash taught that the purpose of all this sending for and failing of magicians was so that Joseph might come at the end and be raised to high rank. 47During the seven years of abundance, the land brought forth bountifully. His wifes name, Asenath, is similar to Egyptian names in the second and first millennia B.C.E. 38So Pharaoh asked them, Can we find anyone like this man, in whom the Spirit of Godb abides?, 39Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 3Abram continued, Behold, You have given me no offspring, so a servant in my household will be my heir., 4Then the word of the LORD came to Abram, saying, This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir. 32We are twelve brothers, sons of one father. 19My lord asked his servants, Do you have a father or a brother?, 20And we answered, We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done. Rav Naman bar Isaac read the word , NiZTaDaK, "can we show innocence", as an acronym for: We are honest (, Nekonim), we are righteous (, Zaddikim), we are pure (, Tehorim), we are submissive (, Dakkim), we are holy (, Kedoshim). Initially, Joseph was probably acquired to work with the flocks. (Mt 1:16; 13:55, 56; Lu 4:22; Joh 1:45; 6:42) Joseph was also called the son of Heli (Lu 3:23), this evidently being the name of his father-in-law. 33When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, He departed, and Abraham returned home. 6After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted, thin and scorched by the east wind. Genesis 39 is a refreshing example of sexual purity. But Joseph insisted that they were spies and put them in custody. Perhaps it was a mistake. Ruben was the firstborn son, but he was not present when the brothers chose to sell Joseph into slavery (see chapter 37). This view simply cannot be accepted, because the text is just too clear on this matter. [117], Reading Genesis 41:56, "And the famine was over all the face of the earth", a Midrash asked why the text did not simply say, "And the famine was over the earth." In the day that God created man, He made him in His own likeness. [57] Joseph asked about their and of their father's welfare. 35All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. 17In the top basket were all sorts of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head., 18Joseph replied, This is the interpretation: The three baskets are three days. 19And after he had become the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 11One night both the chief baker and I had dreams, and each dream had its own meaning. They may dwell in the land of Goshen. 21When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue Joseph from their hands. Proud member until he comes to whom it belongs; 2Jacob became angry with Rachel and said, Am I in the place of God, who has withheld children from you?, 3Then she said, Here is my maidservant Bilhah. This one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head., 19But his father refused. "[124], Interpreting Jacob's question to his sons in Genesis 42:1, "Why do you look one on another? 59So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abrahams servant and his men. 15And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here. God had not done something for them; He had done something terrible to them. Although a good and righteous man who was waiting for Gods Kingdom, Joseph, because of his fear of unbelieving Jews, did not openly identify himself as a disciple of Jesus Christ. [107], Reading Genesis 41:43, "And he made him ride in his double chariot", a Baraita in the Jerusalem Talmud deduced that at first, only two horses pulled chariots.
